Melissa's Notes

Sudhir gave an update on the Networking to get this project off the ground. Working with region 5(Delaware) Data from Hec-Ras and Stream Stat.

Holding pattern for funding

  1. Continuing Resolution funds unlikely
  2. Likely no money until next calender year.

Bring in alison from region 3 BLTM engine is old and in fortran might need to update it. HEC-RAS models are still the bottleneck if it's not done then we cannot run RSMS.

Problem are in Louisiana from Baton Rouge to New Orleans

  1. Bad intake
  2. New Regulations
  3. Nome

What are the drinking level standards. Keep the Chemicals out of the Water Utility just because the water is being treated does not fix the issues. No one is look ing for some of these compounds even during treatment. Also some of these chemicals can contaminate the treatment plant as it is absorbed into the plant. EWW Oil spill is the only thing being funded.

  1. AI model to to replace Jobson Equation.
  2. More documentation of the API might get paid for.
  3. Nothing really good for funding with Stream Stat.

Classifying Chemicals

  1. How it behaves in env is not know. We are still working on it.
  2. Water Depth also effects the defusion equations.

2 Scenarios

  1. Spills
    1. diffusion and travel time.
  2. Flooding
    1. This would change the model.

Using stream-stats flow to run a RSMS model? Using Steam-stat to see how close the Hec-RAS model is and how Stream-stat could imporve the model. Take a small subset of tributaries that have Hec-Ras and Stream Stat data. Hec-Ras Slopes bring into stream-stats. to see how it improves the model.

Flooding app we have that can show with floods to spot-check slopes. They seemed interested in floods. Peer review datasets and model as people will be looking at it to fail. Icy water Faith is starting to review it for oil sediment.

Reports being sent to Sudhir on Oil aggregates. 2 Papers from Faith Fitzpatrick.

Jake's Notes

  • Faith's counterpart in Region 5 (Cleveland/Lake Erie) Chris Duffy from NOAA.

  • Application of trajectory analysis planner using GNOME (acronym?).

  • Spills coming from Toledo area.

  • Faith also mentioned John Gulch region 5 EPA, contact for IC Water at that level.

  • Region 5 has the most developed state mapping project. Being used as an example for how to organize...

  • ToT only funding is inland spill preparedness program.

  • To build AI model to replace jobson's equations.

  • Kansas water something, wants UI out of beta, publish documentation, not sure timeline on that funding.

  • Streamstats function is supported through water missionary approp, ...

  • Jobsons less accurate for smaller tribs. So streamstats less accurate there.

  • Can we feed hecras slope into streamstats call?

Fran's Followup Email - Papers

Hi, here are the two, well actually three papers on simulating oil particle aggregate formation and transport in rivers. I have a R script for the IDHydroOPA (Jones/Garcia 2018) formulas to run with NHDplus reaches but it isn't published.

Three things on my end that we will keep plugging along (through some ongoing projects) with until our next potential call in January:

1) get more familiar with ICWater 2) continue to see how we incorporate slopes from short 10-m DEM reaches into the NHDPlusv2 reach characteristics — Pete thanks for sending the paper from Rich on Fluvial particle transport — I need to talk to him more. 3) Fix some bugs in Fluoil and run for the Rainy River

Sudhir, I will send you a draft storymap for the Milwaukee estuary where we show seiche/water level changes up the rivers. Maybe there is an opportunity to upgrade the background that it uses and can link to what you proposed.

Thanks, Faith
