Plume Generation

This doc contains the steps to generate a plume in QGIS directly.

Load subcatchments in QGIS

  1. Load subcatchments as a pushpin layer in QGIS.
  2. Before generating the plume, you need to chose a center point for the plume.
  3. To do so,
    1. Go to the Attribute Table of the pushpin layer.
      Attribute Table
    2. Once the Attribute Table is open, choose the subcatchment you want as the center of the plume.
    3. Click on a subcatchment will highlight it in the Yellow color.
    4. To select multiple subcatchments, press CTRL and click on the desired subcatchments.
  4. Now your chosen subcatchments should appear in Yellow color on the map.
caution

If you skip this step, you won't be able to check the option Selected features only in the next step.

Buffer to generate a plume

  1. To generate a plume of an elliptical shape, in the Processing Toolbox search for Rectangles, Ovals and Diamonds.Rectangles, Ovals and Diamonds
  2. Chose the subcatchments as the input layer. Check the Selected features only.
  3. Make the shape as Oval.
  4. Set the width to 6000 ft
  5. Set the height to 12000 ft
  6. Optional: Rotation of 45
  7. Segments: 1000 Buffer plume
  8. Click Run
  9. Ta-da! Your plume is ready. Generated plume

Subcatchments affected by plume

To find the subcatchments affected by the plume, do a Join Attributes by location.

  1. Make the pushpins as the base layer.
  2. Make the plume as the join layer.
  3. Check Discard records which could not be joined.Spatial Join
  4. Click Run
  5. You now have the subcatchments affected by the plume.
